Paul Mitchell

Founder and Managing Director of Blockhouse Consulting

Paul is an independent consultant with well over 20 years of experience in advising financial services businesses on strategy and innovation. He has worked with the largest corporations and the smallest startups. In recent years, his focus has been on the disruption driven by blockchains and digital assets, and the impact they will have on our lives.

He began his career as a civil engineer in London, then moved to Deloitte, helping to develop their methodology to manage major programmes. He moved to Cape Town to join a small strategy firm, then left to join a middleware startup, 10 years before “The Lean Startup” was published. After the sale of this business, he returned to strategy consulting, running a boutique strategy firm focused on financial services, and later freelancing in the same industry.

In 2017, he founded the blockchain team at PwC in South Africa, and led the team who wrote the report for Project Khokha, the South African Reserve Bank’s first CBDC experiment. After leaving PwC, he established a consulting capability at Block Markets Africa, and worked on Project Khokha 2, and its subsequent extension into a variety of blockchain projects run by some of SA’s largest financial institutions.

In 2023, he established Blockhouse Consulting, an independent consulting business with a focus on the potential of new business models enabled by blockchain, and the implications of the technology for incumbent players.
